47 Degrees, Part of Xebia, is a global consulting firm specialising in functional programming and safe software systems. We’re always looking for talented individuals to lead and nurture projects involving Scala, Kotlin, and other engineering and big data technologies.

47 Degrees promotes and participates in diverse community projects, including popular open-source libraries, training events through our Academy, and D&I initiatives. Additionally, we build reliable and safe systems for our clients. We want to advance the standard in the industry by leveraging better testing and verification tools. We've been doing so for a while, with our involvement with the Scala Center and open-source projects like Arrow and Arrow Analysis.

We routinely develop concurrent systems involving microservices, message queues, and other components. In many cases, those are vital to our client, so we want to formalize those core parts and verify they work under various conditions.

The Role

Some of the job responsibilities may include:

  • You'll spend most of your time working in the research team contributing to internal and community projects on which 47 Degrees and its clients depend. These projects may include the language, compiler, and other community projects.
  • Help mentor new engineers, document, and help with the adoption of research-related projects.
  • Represent 47 Degrees with speaking engagements at events/seminars around the globe and virtually.
  • Support our sales team in describing and finding opportunities to apply research-related projects in new or existing clients.

  • Be a nice person and a team player.
  • Proven ability to work independently and effectively in a distributed team.
  • 4+ years of real, hands-on experience in compilers, compiler plugins, or similar metaprogramming environments.
  • 1+ years of real, hands-on experience in Scala within a professional environment.
  • Strong coding skills and Computer Science fundamentals.
  • A desire to continually expand and refine your technical knowledge.
  • Experience working in an agile development environment.
  • Excellent command of oral and written English.
  • Experience working with VCS like Git.

  • Knowledge about Scala3’s Dotty compiler, type system, and compiler plugin infrastructure.
  • Experience building languages or tooling around programming languages.
  • Functional programming skills.
